Fog Client not working

  • I have used and setup FOG several times before. I have finally convinced my school district to use FOG district wide. I have setup am machine with Ubuntu with 12.04 server and ran updates. I installed FOG 0.32 and went about uploading my images. That is when I ran into a problem.

When the image is done the machine loads windows for the first time. In the past the computer would reboot twice, once for the hostname change and once for the Domain, and this always occurred almost immediately. Unfortunately now the host name change is happening between 20 minutes and an hour later. The AD add is hit or miss, some do and some don’t. This is happening across several makes and model computers. I keep seeing the same thing in the log files regarding the individual services timing out while contacting the Fog Server.

The only entry in the event viewer points to the DHCP not completing successfully. Event ID 1003.

I have almost 500 machines to image and only 2 weeks until classes start. I am royal in trouble if I can’t figure this out. I have thought about reverting to .28 or .29, but I demoed version .32 at one of the schools in the district not more than 3 months ago working fine. Only difference was the AD was 2008 there instead of 2003 at the district office.

  • Have you checked the DHCP scope to make sure its populating the default gateway? I had this problem when I setup a new scope in a rush for my VMware vlan.

  • After hours of pulling my hair out today here is what I have found:

Client is able to boot the PXE menu and receive the image. Upon rebooting into windows the Fog client is unable to communicate with the server. If I change the client to a Static IP (the same one that it got from DHCP) everything works great. Back to DHCP and no more connection. I am totally lost. It doesn’t appear to be a VLAN issue as the client and Fog server are on different vlans and switches.

It doesn’t appear to be timing as I tried switching the FOG service to manual and launching it well after the computer was logged on to no avail.

What could the significance of DHCP be on the Fog client’s ability to connect back to the server for task, hostname changer, printer etc…

  • Tried a dumb switch connected between DHCP/AD, FOG and Client and I still get the same problem. I am no expert, but the problems seems to be with FOG working before the network is fully available. Some have mentioned that .net 4 Full has caused similar problems. Someone mentioned a modification to FOG to have the Hostname and AD information changed in the Sysprep file instead of using the FOg Service.

I am lost. I am going to try uploading the image to the FOG server that was working at the other school and try to determine if it is the server or the client that is the problem?

I am in full panic mode as school is right around the corner.

Check your portfast/STP settings on your switches. The ports may not be active when the machine boots and tries to get DHCP.
