Issue imaging after updating kernels

Our company recently got in some new Lenovo PC’s (running Intel 6th Gen Skylake) and the nics were failing as I had older kernels. so I updated the kernels/init files manually on my FOG server (/var/www/fog/service/ipxe) with the most recent versions from FOG. FOG now is showing in the compatibility check section that the network passes. My problem is that the new init files are causing the following message:

I moved the old init files (from 7/15) back and it just states unable to register host, reason invalid MAC address. It doesn’t give me any message like with the new init files. I currently cant image anything so after looking around online, I decided to post here. Thank you for your help.

I suppose you have a FOG 1.2.0 server (see in the blue cloud on the web gui), right?

Newer (FOG trunk) init’s are not compatible with FOG 1.2.0! This is why you see the “invalid MAC address” error. Using newer kernels (and old init’s) might work to some extend if you need newer drivers. But fully upgrading to the latest FOG trunk is definitely the way to go. Maybe just setup a fresh FOG trunk on a different machine while leaving the old server kind of untouched - so you can check it out and see it everything works.

@Sebastian-Roth I think they mean Using trunk’s init’s has a lot more useful output when compared to the 1.2.0 inits.

I’m sorry I forgot to mention I am running 1.2.0.

When I had the new kernels/init files, with the new init file I would get that Ext4 error. If I moved the old init file, it would state unable to register host for the following reasons: It would then endlessly scroll (this was with trying register the new 6th Gen Intel PC’s we were getting. I can register our older 4th Gen Intel Lenovo PC’s its just the new 6th Gen Intel Lenovo PC’s we have we are not able to image.

Please forgive my ignorance, as I am new to FOG/Ubuntu. Is it possible to upgrade 1.2.0 to the Fog Trunk or does this require a total reinstall of FOG? Is there a link to upgrading/installing the trunk? Thanks.

Upgrade from FOG 1.2.0 is definitely supported and usually goes well. Make sure you have all your passwords at hand (MySQL, FTP, …). If you don’t get the web gui up you need to take a look at the apache error logs (see my signature). If you get the schema updater page over and over again it usually fails because of MySQL credentials or the DB is not running properly (sometimes Ubuntu is a bit picky with that). I wanted to thank you guys for your help. I updated to the Trunk (version 8179) and its working out just fine, its able to see the new PC’s and can register/image them without any problem. Thanks again.
