Intel NUC DC53427HYE stuck at "ipxe initialising devices.."
-
Having issues with a pxe boot on an Intel nuc. I tried several of these new nuc’s all have the same issue. From another topic i read on the forums i also tried to boot to a live CD then do a reboot (something about giving the nic a clean reboot), that does not work either. Just did a new SVN checkout and reinstall of fog version: 5325 Error persists. Any thoughts or help anyone can think of? Thanks!

@kirkk Do you try UEFI or legacy BIOS mode? Which iPXE binary do you use? undionly.kpxe/.kkpxe, intel.kpxe/.kkpxe, ipxe.efi??
Please follow this and maybe try the provided EFI binaries (if not legacy mode) and let us know what you see as debugging ouput (picture where numbers can be read are very helpful): https://forums.fogproject.org/topic/4728/dell-7010-lenovo-l530-with-uefi-enabled-won-t-network-boot

I have tried both legacy and uefi, and both enabled at the same time. I am currently running undionly.kpxe
when on uefi only it goes >>checking media presence >>media present >>starting pxe over ipv4 (then switches to) >>starting pxe over ipv6. and does not move past that point. I will try looking at the EFI link and get back to you. -
Changing the boot file to ipxe.efi fixes the issue. Just change between those settings then depending on the type of device I am trying to image?

@kirkk No, this can be handled by the DHCP server. Settings depend on which DHCP you use. See here: https://wiki.fogproject.org/wiki/index.php/BIOS_and_UEFI_Co-Existence

I haven’t tried the nucs yet with the svn trunk yet, but I did have an issue with them using 1.2.0. They were getting stuck at the ipxe initializing devices. It was having a problem configuring the realtek nic.
I was tried to boot legacy mode (since uefi did not work well with 1.2.0). If I remember correctly I had to update the bios to the latest version. Then on the NUCs I was using in the advanced bios setting there was a compatibility mode. On the one I was using there was linux, win7, win8. I had to set the bios to legacy boot, I think enable legacy roms, and select win7 mode. Save and exit the bios, then POWER IT OFF. If I did not power it off after making the changes it will continue to get stuck at the ipxe initializing devices. By accident I powered it off and then after that it started working. I should have another one in about 2 weeks where I can try them again to see if they are any better with the svn trunk version.

We know about some NUCs that work: https://wiki.fogproject.org/wiki/index.php/WorkingDevices
But every NUC seams to be a little different. Sometimes even needs BIOS downgrade I heard. Take a look here: https://forums.fogproject.org/topic/4626/intel-nuc-d54250wyk-network-boot

Can you please update and try again?
I found that while I removed the old “cached” code setup stuff, apparently it still likes the nic’s to come down, then up before ipxe dhcp will readily accept data.
