Hi Guys

With the latest release of FOG I thought why not ask a question that is itching me for a long time.
The is a lot of information and a lot of tutorials and appendixes and so on … but it would be nice to have a decent tutorial that covers all the basics of setting up FOG and upgrading it ?
May-be rewriting the actual ones from scratch to have an updated version ?
Also it would be nice to have these in another language (dutch and french).

So these are the questions I am struggling with:
Which OS is best suited for FOG ?
(Having a decision matrix for deciding with OS to choose to use FOG would come in handy here).

How to setup a virtual model for demonstration purposes in virtualbox or VMware ?
(Meaning which setting are needed to reflect any real life environment ?)
Later on you could transpose the virtual configuration to a real life production situation.

The setup I would like to have of FOG would consist of a dedicated laptop (dual network setup ?) and there is a catch where I am struggling with. Integrating it in a network environment where we don’t have admin rights.
A lot of schools don’t have windows-servers or linux servers but use the DHCP-function provided by to modem of the provider. I know this limits the working area. There has been written a lot of material and documentation about this but it would be handy to consolidate this in easy hands-on scenarios. Step by step explaining the caveats to avoid.

I believe a decent tutorial will help a lot of first-timers to FOG to install it in a successful way.
Are there developers and veteran users of FOG willing to co-author and help us out with this documentation ?

Yours sincerly

S.

I guess I’m at a loss what you’re meaning.

The documentation may be slightly outdated and we’re working slowly to correct this. That said, we’ve been able to make some fairly large strides in keeping FOG development active and updated. The Documentation sometimes falls behind but isn’t so bad that people can’t figure things out.

I know it could be better, believe me when I say, but it could be much worse.

I’m all for having people assist with the documentation and writing tutorials. If you’re interested in updated and assisting with the Documentation make a request for WIKI access. If you have tutorials you’d like to write, please by all means don’t let me stop you.

I will do my best to assist you with this as well.

Please help us build the FOG community with everyone involved. It's not just about coding - way more we need people to test things, update documentation and most importantly work on uniting the community of people enjoying and working on FOG! Get in contact with me (chat bubble in the top right corner) if you want to join in.

Web GUI issue? Please check apache error (debian/ubuntu: /var/log/apache2/error.log, centos/fedora/rhel: /var/log/httpd/error_log) and php-fpm log (/var/log/php*-fpm.log)

Please support FOG if you like it: https://wiki.fogproject.org/wiki/index.php/Support_FOG

Hi .

@ Stefaan De Wilde : I don’t think “Decent” is an appropriate word regarding to efforts and work made around this project .

But somehow you’re right a wiki update would be great to newbies and I.T who would try out that wonderfull tool .
Note that it’s quite easy to install and make it works whithout much trouble .
Personnaly i use FOG at work and it simply rocks so i am volunteer .

Regards .

For your environment (using an unmodifiable / limited DHCP), you’d use ProxyDHCP (dnsmasq).

And,

I’ve been working really hard on documentation in the WiKi and ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Get in touch with me via messaging and we can collaborate together? I also have a To-Do list for the WiKi that I really should share with everyone… But I don’t want just anyone posting on it… Maybe I can just turn my To-Do list into a WiKi page…

I’m with you on this manual stuff.
Although I think it could be easier by only putting a few versions. Like LTS verisons

Anyway i have already built a 1.3 manual for CentOS7x64 only but is easy to follow for beginners. I have a wiki mod account and will import on lease. Currently i am upgrading my version and making sure it’s 100% and has any new mods since i 1st wrote it.

/images at 1st install is a new option that i have made a note of but not cleaned up yet.

Please find @ http://blog.ibuddy.info/index.php/2015/06/fog-v-1-3-on-centos-7-full-install-guide/

I think one for Ubuntu LTS (latest) and maybe another should be enough? no??

I’m also going to make a xenserver and vmware VM for 1.3 So anyone want to do a hyper-v or vbox ?
If so we could all setup the same so it’s the same for whatever you need. documents can then be std.

I’d love to do a few articles or write some things up but not everyone has access 🙂
