Hi,

im trying to image a dualboot system.

I installed windows 7 first then Ubuntu 14.04 with ext4. Grub2 is by default installed and ext4 is used.

I tried to restore this image to another computer but after the reboot, i got this message grom grub :
error: unknown filesystem

      Entering rescue mode…
I read that grub2 was not supported by previous version of FOG, does it apply to FOG v1.0.1 ?! I am using partclone, image type is Linux, Multiple partition image - Single disk.

      Thank you

        Ok, i think Grub2 is not guilty…

I noticed that my ext4 partitions are not properly imaged ! the / partition should be around 10Gb but the file is 246MB…So Grub2 cannot boot on an non existing FS…

SO, question…is ext4 well supported with partclone ? I tried with a machine test, all is the same, i just changed the FS with ext3 and the image works great ! I’ll start soon the download on another client…

ext4 support IS supported with partclone.

The File size isn’t the determining factor. If on your server the file size is 246 MB, what’s the actual Data Size in use on the system?

Ext3 should also be the same. It uses the exact same method to image ext3, for 4 so nothing should change between them.

Did your Ubuntu installation go to logical or primary partitions? I’ve got a demo client system with windows 7 (primary partitions 1 & 2), and ubuntu 14.04 (primary partition 3 = /, 4 = swap), using grub 2. It appears to be working well. I did have problems when I did the default install, which put the ubuntu partitions as logical (5,6), since it appears these partitions are not cloned correctly.

FOG’s imaging process does not work well with logical partitions. I’m sorry about that. It’s only aware of the primary partitions. I don’t know of any cloning software that works well with logical partitions. Though if you must use logical parts, then I’d recommend using the RAW imaging type so everything is completely maintained. It may take a while longer but it should keep everything.

Thank you for your responses. Ok i understand why it failed.

Yes, there are 3 logical volumes for Ubuntu. But maybe i can bypass this by using LVM in the third primary partition.

                  • sda1 for windows 7 recovery
                  • sda2 for c:\
                  • sda3 for LVM

Tom, before FOG, i used DRBL/Clonezilla and if i remember correctly, everything worked properly about logical partitions.

Thank you, i’ll try it !

I’ve made updates to the fog.download and fog.upload scripts that use sfdisk to save/restore logical partitions. It appears to be working on my test scenarios. I’ll post them to the developer forum, in case you want to use them.

Can this be used to backup MBR?

sfdisk is used to save and restore the partition table layout, in addition to the dd commands to save and restore the MBR.

So, my changes only deal with MBR style partitions, and leave the MBR bootloader backup as is.

Cool fractal13, Tom, these modifications are already implemented ? I updated this morning, i tried to image a machine with logical volume but no success.

i let Linux as operating system and put multiple partitions image - single disk.

                            Thank you

Check the /images/YOURIMAGE directory. If there is a d1.partitions file, then the partitions were saved during the upload. If not, did you pull from svn, or download the tar.gz file to update?

                                Thanks.

Hi, i update this morning, the imaging works great but when the pc restart, a dash is blinking and that’s all. No grub loading.

d1.mbr is well present, all my partitions are presents and have the correct size.

During the pxe boot, i get a message :
esas2r : driver will no be loaded because no ATTO esas2r devices were found i2c-parport-light adaptater type unspecified
No, this is because your system most likely has either of those two devices. It may be a problem if your systems actually DO have these devices and these errors still are present.

Are you still having grub2 problems? I just found some more information that could cause grub2 imaging to fail in some common cases. I’m working on a patch now that appears to be promising.

That said, I’ve added the code base for this into svn. I have not rebuilt the init’s yet, but that will come shortly.
