VMware vSphere 5.5 announced

A note for those of you who use FOG on VMware. vSphere 5.5 was just announced 2 weeks which looks to provide pretty significant improvements over 5.1. Thankfully Workstation 10 already has these improvements so you can do some testing! You can review what’s new here

also note that you shouldn’t upgrade the virtual hardware of your vms as you will not be able to edit there settings as you need the vshpere web client (paid)

I found that you can also use Workstation 10 to edit the settings of the VM’s. Though the one feature, at least for me, to upgrade was the removal of the 32GB of RAM per server

Dayam, I better look into this.
Does that mean I cant alter RAM or hdd settings once the vm is made?
Because I can still do that…in fact I had to for UniTrends Backup. -
You can still do this if you leave the VMware compatibility at level 9. If you upgrade your VM’s to version 10, you need either vSphere or Workstation 10 to edit. However, you can still create VM’s with version 9 compatibility and still edit everything like you were able to before.

Ahhh ok then, Im glad I asked!
Im running most on version 8 it seems, they work fine so unless you know of any compelling reasons to (somehow) upgrade them to version 9 or 10 even, il stick with what is working!Thanks Kevin!

If everything is working for you, i’d say just keep it the way it is. No need to fix it if it isn’t broke. The only reason you may want to upgrade the compatibility to level 10 is that you can up your hard drive space from 2TB to 62TB per drive. We needed to do this for a couple of our servers, but it’s rare that you would need a VM with that kind of space. But then again, you’d need VMWare Workstation or vSphere to edit it from there.
Now if they offered HA for 2 free ESXi servers, just for absolute basic redundancy, i’d be in thrilled. We are on a strong push to move our teams to VM’s instead of having actual boxes at their desk for testing.
