Host name changer & Host product key
-
Greetings, I am once again requesting support regarding FOG and it’s abilities.
I have (many) multiples PCs that I need to rename and put on Windows 10 so My goal is to sysprep and Image & deploy it. The Issue is that when I tried to change the Hostname with the FOG Web interface : nothing happen. How can I make it work ?
Im also wondering if I input a Host product Key after deploying my image, will it change the Windows key ? I wouldn’t like to have no or same key for each PC.
Thanks.

@DPR-SIO If neither of these functcions are working for you, I have to ask if you installed the FOG Client into the golden image before you sysprep and captured the golden image. If no, then the actions you mentioned are executed by the FOG Client (agent).
I can give you a few options for imaging.
If the FOG Client (agent) is installed:
- Use the FOG built in functions to system renaming, and configuration.
- If the target systems are already deployed use the FOG Snapin system to push powershell scripts to rename the pc and apply the windows keys.
If the FOG Client isn’t or can’t be installed
- Use a FOG Post Install Script (a bash script created by you) to update the unattend.xml file on the deployed computer with the proper computer name, OU location, AD domain, and license key need by the target computer. You can make this post install script dynamic so it can change what it does at deploy time based on target location. Then when oobe/winsetup runs at first boot it reads the settings and configures the target computer. If you don’t plan on managing the target computer with FOG after deployment then you can use the FOG iPXE menu to Deploy Image without needing to register the computers with FOG before imaging.

@george1421 Thanks for the reply, The hostname changer now works : It turns out it cannot rename PC like that and require “Rename > Image deployment > New Name is applied” but I have no idea if the Host product key has been changed and I’ve found no way to check.

@DPR-SIO From within windows activation you should be able to see a fragment of the license key to see if it was activated or the old key at least.

There is a free utility called ShowKeyPlus, which is in the Microsoft Store. This will show you your product key. It will show you the original Win 7/8 key you used to upgrade if you went that route as well.
Once installed via the store you can dig around and locate the ShowKeyPlus.exe file in the hidden folder for Appx apps. It will run on its own as a standalone utility. I put it on the desktop of my golden image so I can easily check.
Of course you want to run ShowKeyPlus BEFORE you image, and save the key to add to the Fog database when you register the host (you must add manually).
