USB PXE BOOTING
-
Dear FOG users/developers,
Recently we are using HP Elitebook 840 G6 laptop models. These models do not have a RJ-45 Ethernet port, so we are trying to get USB PXE booting to work. We are using HP port replicator 3005 for USB network booting. (also ordered a HP USB to RJ-45 adapter to see if this will make any change)
Our FOG Setup:
- Out of the box installation with no firewall or selinux.
- DHCP polices where:
> undionly.kpxe for BIOS x64
> ipxe.efi for UEFI x64 - Changed init and bzimage, because of slow clone runtimes according to: https://forums.fogproject.org/topic/13620/very-slow-cloning-speed-on-specific-model/14?lang=nl&page=6
USB PXE boot does boot into FOG menu, and also quick registration seems to work. (host appears on webinterface as registered)
Except after assiging a ‘image’ and ‘capture task’ in the web interface, and rebooting the ‘registered host’ into FOG BOOT menu again, FOG PXE boot menu displays ‘host not registered’ while it is…We are only using FOG for quick capturing and deploying images (we don’t even really need host registration) so our question is: Is it possible to use FOG with USB, and what is the easiest way to accomplish this, taking in account our limited usage?
Thanks for your reply, i really appreciate it
Cheers,
ReinierPS. I did found some topics on this subject, but its not clear to me what we should do.

It appears (guess) that FOS or iPXE is seeing two different network adapters as nic0. It is possible to boot FOS Linux from a usb stick. The issue is that the deploy image function you use is a product of iPXE and not avaialble via the FOS Linux usb boot method. With that said there is a hack of the FOS Linux usb boot hack that can simulate the “iPXE Deploy Image” menu.
I posted instructions on how to do this with graphical representation late last year but I can’t seem to find it at the moment. In this post it kind of explains how to do it with the FOS Linux grub menu. https://forums.fogproject.org/topic/12842/fos-boot-usb-quick-image-issue/12
Edit: Ah I found it, look at the last post in this thread: https://forums.fogproject.org/topic/13977/suggestion-please/66?lang=en-US&page=1
