I am running Fog version 1.5.4 on Ubuntu 18.04 and have successfully uploaded my two Lenovo images for the majority of the desktops we have in our building. Under FOG CONFIGURATION, I have EFI Exit type set at REFIN_EFI and Boot Exit set at GRUBB_FIRST_HDD and my Lenovo Mini reboots with no problem. However, my Lenovo M73 desktop gets hung up on reboot with the following message: Launching GRUB… begin pxe scan … Starting cmain ( ) …

Also primary boot sequence lists NETWORK 1st and boot priority is UEFI first.

If I press ESC when PC first boots up at the screen that says DHCP…, this cancels PXE boot and loads Windows 10 as normal.

What exit type or other FOG configuration settings need to be applied, so that computers will boot REGARDLESS of model?

I would recommend that you set the BIOS exit mode to SANBOOT and only use GRUB if SANBOOT is giving a problem. The default for uefi is rEFInd. If refind has issues there is a config file you can use to boot. But circling back SANBOOT works for 99.5% of the bios based systems just fine.

This one is a little confusing to understand. Most companies that use FOG boot through the fog menu into the operating system. In this method the computer will pxe boot to the FOG iPXE menu wait until the timeout then boot the default menu item, this is typically the local hard drive.

In my case I have the HD set first in the boot order and then require an IT tech to press F12 during booting to select PXE boot to image. That way if the fog server goes away or the user takes a laptop off site it will always boot normally. Plus requiring the IT Tech to purposely boot into the iPXE menu we don’t have any imaging mishaps like imaging the wrong computer if everything was automated.

I don’t think there is one answer to this question. There are far too many combinations of hardware, firmware, and site configurations for one set of settings to work for everyone. I suspect that is why the exit settings exist for both the server (FOG Configuration \ iPXE Menu Settings \ Boot Exit Settings) and the individual hosts; the server can be configured to take care of the bulk of machines and exceptions made for those that don’t work with those settings.

Web GUI issue? Please check apache error (debian/ubuntu: /var/log/apache2/error.log, centos/fedora/rhel: /var/log/httpd/error_log) and php-fpm log (/var/log/php*-fpm.log)
