Hi,
SOLVED both issues:
that’s making me hope and courage that my test with self made kernels went to good,
i have some Fujitsu CAD Workstations and HP 6305 MT that doesn’t work.
Good to hear it’s working for u *thumbs up
Where is exactly the C600 driver? can you navigate me from entry point of config?
Greetz X23
Hi,
If you need help making a custom kernel, just keep up with what you’ve done, post your questions, and we’ll help as best we can. It appears daunting, but after you run through it a few times on a VM, it’s gets simple.
actually it’s doing fine i have succesfully compiled two kernels but i cannot test them at home, iam back at work next week on tuesday. http://fogproject.org/wiki/index.php?title=Building_a_Custom_Kernel
Will the latest 3x kernel work with fog? is it true that the april kernel 3.8.8 is then a 3.8.8x kernel?
Greetz X23
Hi,
Good work around for our one offs! Thanks!
have you ever tried a self made kernel? Iam actually testing with kernel sources of 2.6.39.4 and 3.9.2
Greetz X23
Hi,
This is a workaround, if you have generalized images (Sysprep for Windows).
but only in case of deploy, i mainly will use fog to backup, i cannot go to each not booting machine the backup manually.
Seems i really have to cook a kernel myself argh!
Greetz X23
Hi,
thanks again… well i will figure that out and report back…
Lets build a kernel K+E+R+N+E+L childsplay hehe *joking
Greetz X23
Hi,
thank you for your answer.
Means i can place many kernels in the kernel directory for example bzImage_3.8.8
Do you refernce the full path to kernel or just the filename?
The Systems not working are pretty new, my mind tells me that older kernels cannot
give any success?
Lets say i cannot get it to work with any available kernel i need to cook one myself as last straw?!
I’ll try to post some screenhots (errors) of the non working systems.
I know that KS are Kitchensink kernels but what are PS Kernels?
Greetz X23
Hi,
i have problem with some machines that wont boot the latest kernel 3.8.8.
What is best practice to figure out which older kernel may work? Trying?
How can i quick register clients when have to choose one standard kernel
that will not boot every system, afai know i just can set this or that kernel
only when the clients are already in the inventory?

Hi chad-bisd,
that means that my images will not replicated when my non fog storage node is in master mode right?
Well then i have to write my own procedure to do a replication if needed.
Each storage node has a maximum number of slots it will image concurrently. Once that is reached, it queues the rest.
means if i have 4 scheduled images that may overlap fog let 3 computers run and if the first is finished it starts the 4 one also if the schedule time is overdue?
The clients check in every 10 seconds to see if a slot has opened up and if they are next in line to grab that slot
Sounds like you talk about the fog windows client? will it reboot a computer if an image is scheduled so it can boot over pxe to make the image?
I think you just need to select all the machines you want to image, throw them into a group, and tell the group to deploy the images. It should queue them and process more as they finish.
I don’t want to mass deploy i want to mass create images with an intelligent mechanism.

Hi,
we have around 150 computers i like to image in a fixed time schedule, i can do this in the following time windows:
- monday-friday from 7:30 pm - 07:00 am

- saturday-monday from sa 4: pm - mo 07:00 am
I think it’s enough to have a weekly image for each computer.
I think the average imaging time for 1 computer that is imaging exlusivly with around 20-50gb data will take 10-25min to image.
Counted in hours it’s 62,5 hours these are 3750 minutes divided by in worse case 25 minutes = lol 150 pffff
But…
Howto time the schedule plan optimal? Afai can see there is no intelligence when scheduling imaging task like only 3 clients at same time, check when next client is finished to immediately start the next one and so on.
Am i wrong or how do you manage such cases?
Greetz X23
Hi,
is something like that existing or in the brewery?
Greetz X23
Hi,
check first post… this was already there: http://fogproject.org/forum/threads/no-disk-usage-free-space-information-for-another-storage-node-nfs.4276/

definitely! thank you will try different things and report back later.

Hi,
All you need is a well configured FTP and NFS Server on another machine.

You need to set the Home Directory to the directory in front if it, means if you have x:\images you need to define x: because fog scripts don’t try to do something relativ to the /images directory.

I Simply added a Storage Node Definition in its own Storage Group independent to the default storage Group, added it’s IP 172.19.102.6 and the path /images/ because it’s the path 172.19.102.6 exports also /images/dev/ like an original FOG node does.

I use the following Windows NFS Server: http://www.hanewin.net/nfs-e.htm
Additionally i’ve setup Filezilla Server with an user that uses the credentials entered in the Storage node definition.
I just do this with Windows for testing purposes, i will later switch to a dedicated FOG Storage Server or at least a standalone Storage Server that supports NFS.
On the Fog Server i created the Folder /images2/dev/ and it’s .mntcheck files then i added a line in fstab for mounting /images2 on startup.

Except the freespace.php communication between fog servers i hope that there is not more, replication between nodes is hopefully done by ftp or nfs only?!
What should i say, that works… Wondering? The Trick is to not disable the DefaultMember node even not using it. i don’t need it because my FOG VM uses only a 8GB Partition. Confused? Me too
The way i did this is a bit dirty but and finally i have to try what happens if i mount the external nfs share to /images. But this idea is bad because the traffic will be redirected between client and fog storage node from fog itselfs… actually clients directly communicate with the external nfs storage and i have high throughputs of data (up to 3GB/min). The redirection will brake it for sure!

Hi,
thank you Jaymes for this great answer.
Some more questions please:
1.) It’s like you told me, i had choosen Single Partition instead of Multipartition but why is there this resize Problem?

2.) Is this a behaviour of partimage?

3.) If i choose Multipartition will the image blow up?

4.) Means will it also save null data?
Anyway null data should be hardly compressible but i need to understand how exactly that works.
5.) It’s unlikely that a computer get a smaller hdd then before but lets say it’s a bigger hdd what about the additional hdd space will it be allocated or leaving blank?

6.) When last it’s the same like the MBR thing in Single Partition mode, rework have to be done to blow up the partition size i hope increasing will work automatically?

7.) What about changing a hdd against a ssd this is a case a storage medium went smaller, what would you do here? Making a single partition image, restore, fix mbr?
Greetz X23
Hi,
very nice answer thank you @maltibelli
Some additional questions:
1.) This Kitchensink thing is it similar like a busybox enabling this that and those option?

2.) How should i know which drivers are in which KS Kernel enabled or not?

3.) Lets say i have problems with the latest kernel 3.8.8 on some machines how to find

out which kernel is good by trying or is there something more cogently?
Greetz X23
Hi,
no matter which machine i try to backup and then making a test restore, each of it will not boot cause of missing mbr.
Does Partimage do not save the MBR and will restore it when i restore an image?
Is it possible to write a fixMBR Snapin? Is one existing?
I hope i don’t to run manually to each machine to fixMBR this will be annoying.
Any ideas? Do you have the same problem?
