ok, just so you can see what I get when uploading to the VM 10.04 ubuntu fog server here’s my graph… I’m posting it because its over a gig network and I thought it might be of interest as its very spiky, which further exacerbates the gap issue.

    • RE: Bandwidth-graph on WebUI

I have found the same thing on ubuntu 10.04 with fog 0.32 on both virtual platforms and physical hardware. I assumed to be honest that the drop out was to do with buffering into ram perhaps… it would be good if someone who knows the exact reason for it explained it perhaps, and if there’s a solution to the issue that doesnt involve buying high speed 15K disks or something of that nature.

Just out of curiosity Kevin, are you using RAID 5 by any chance? Both of my fog servers run RAID 5 disk arrays, one running the virtual fog server on top of it sits on a RAID 5 3 disk array, and the other is a dual xeon platform with a 6 disk RAID 5 platform.

Can anyone post pictures of a graph that doesnt look like this and tell us what the configuration is?

    • RE: FTP Errors

I had a similar issue with my fog server when I moved it from a VM to a real box. The issue I had was that when uploading an image it would do the upload but not move it over to /images/. I found that changing the fogstorage user over to an account on the system that had access to the files via ftp worked. I had my password correct too but it just wouldnt take it for some reason.

Anyway, I dont think there are any security vulnerabilities doing it this way, just hope this helps with your problem.

    • RE: FOG on Raspberry Pi

I’m not saying it cant be done but having one myself and using it for some development, I will say that the processing power of the RPi is going to be an issue even sustaining 100Mbit broadcasts over prolonged periods of time. Its a nice idea but I would seriously consider other options. (IMHO of course).

    • RE: Issues with Snap-ins

Chad do you think my giving the service local administrator access will suffice then? I assumed that should there be a vulnerability that if it had only local admin privileges, it would be a lot less of a threat to the security of my network that way rather than give it a domain account that allowed local privileges. I see exactly what you are saying, I guess my question is simply, is it safe the way I did it in your opinion?

    • RE: Pre-built isolated network builds?

Just to let you know of my own personal experiences with FOG setups, I use Ubuntu server 10.04 for the main fog server, I never update it because when I have in the past when I first started using fog I found that things broke (not necessarily to do directly with fog software). I also have a second storage server that I’ve been using that works for me seamlessly on Ubuntu 12.04. I’ve basically stuck to these because I’ve found the platforms solid for what I’m doing.

If you would like help setting up I am sure I could help out and I’m perfectly willing to talk you through the process.

    • RE: Fog + SSD + Win 7

I noticed exactly the same and would just like to add weight to the argument for imaging using the multi-partition single disk option. I think it may be specific to windows 7, not sure.

    • RE: PXE Boot Error - Disk Drive not found

For future reference I think the scsi issue MIGHT be the client side kernel. I dont know if the standard kernel you get with the fog install for the network boot is scsi enabled or not. I could be wrong but thats the first thing that pops into my mind. Perhaps if a developer sees this they could clarify?

I also know that you can replace those kernels with different ones… I’m sure there’s a solution to the problem for anyone wanting to do this any how.

    • RE: Issues with Snap-ins

The only other likely thing that springs to mind is that perhaps its a vlan issue? I guess it depends what port fogservice uses to talk to the server on and if thats allowed… presuming that you use vlans?

Lets see how the local administrator thing pans out. I’m hoping its that simple for you.

    • RE: Issues with Snap-ins

That script looks absolutely fine to me, I’d go with the permissions thing too. I have had several issues with some snapins early on and nearly all of them went away when I told fog client to run under the local administrator account. I’m not saying thats your issue, but give it a go so it can be discounted if its not the fix.

By the way, the sleep.exe app is in the script I notice… not to patronise at all, as I use it myself, but you have downloaded it right? You dont seem like a novice at all, but I’m just mentioning it in case its something that slipped your mind.

Anyhow… I’ve included screenshots of what I did to fog client for you to try.

Incidentally I have a fully working snapin of Adobe Reader 11.0.1 Which you are more than welcome to.

    • RE: Fedora 18 / Fog problem - newbie

I have absolutely no intention of starting an immature flame war over who’s distro is better. Fact is I only use ubuntu for fog anyhow, I use other distro’s for some of my other servers. I think you’ve come to these forums expecting them to be like most others mate… they’re not. We’re all quite friendly and nobody’s forcing anyone to use any distro they dont want to. The moment this forum turns into a distro war platform, I’d be out of here myself.

    • RE: Issues with Snap-ins

Can you be more specific? For instance, what are you trying to deploy? Is it an msi package or something you’ve put together perhaps? Perhaps a screen shot or a list of parameters you’ve maybe used etc?

I’ve had a lot of success with the snapins on FOG personally but not before a few painful hours scratching my head understanding the process when I first set up FOG. Hopefully we can help but we need as much detail as possible.

    • RE: Fedora 18 / Fog problem - newbie

In case you hadn’t read my post properly… I never claimed to know any answers. I merely offered up the good experiences I had with my distro of choice. In case you also missed the fact that I said to him that I know it doesnt fix his problem… I clearly did… go back, read it again, and dont be so condescending.

Sorry, but that was not very polite or even a valid point. Oh, and in case you weren’t aware, as you’ve signed up to this forum only today, we are all quite well mannered here and tolerant of each other. With an attitude like this you are likely to get backs up or make people want to leave. Please try to be mature and respectful of others.

    • RE: Fedora 18 / Fog problem - newbie

I dont really know whats going on with your install but just a quick question… Is there some reason you have to use fedora? I’ve found ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04 quite successful with the normal FOG install, and 12.04 has been running a storage node for me very successfully for quite a while now.

I know it doesnt fix the problem, but is there any way you can try a clean install on ubuntu?

    • RE: The best network imaging solution?

Yeah, its feature rich, and to be honest, its not slow at imaging or anything, its just very quirky. We’re running the new version and one of the guys is about to run the service pack on it. I’m just really not sold on it. It feels so uncomfortable to use and things seem to take forever to update and propagate down to the site servers. For instance, adding a machine to a deployment list takes hours to update sometimes, and other times only 10-15 minutes. As far as I am concerned, if its not there almost instantly, what use is it.

Fog is just stripped down and lightening fast. I’m wondering if there are any plans in future versions to add many more features to the project? How many of the suggested features actually make it into production copys of new FOG versions?

    • The best network imaging solution?

I’ve recently been introduced as a network technician who likes to steer well clear of M$ products (but doesnt hate them), when its possible to do it with open source. I’m the only one here that feels this way due to the support angle, but try as I might to convince my manager of the incredible level of support you can get from forums like this one from experts and like minded folk, he’s just not interested.

Luckily for me part of my job entails the running of a small network for our ICT and computer science students and Cisco academy students, for which I use FOG as the distribution system. Now we’re in the process of merging with another large college around the same size as us I am told that SCCM is the best solution for any network distribution of OS’s, packages, updates etc… having looked at it as I am required in part by the department head, I have found the “best solution” comments to be in my own opinion… complete rubbish. It is a quirky annoying pesky little server that I dont like one bit.

I’m just curious more than anything of other peoples beliefs and views on this and other network based OS distribution software techniques. In fact, I know of a few people that have actually ditched SCCM in favour of FOG.

    • RE: FTP Connection to storage server has failed

Thanks. I actually changed it before I got this response to my original user that I set up the ubuntu server with and that worked a treat. I figured it just wanted something with access rights to move the files that had been uploaded. Thanks a lot for the response, I’ll change it just in case it causes a problem down the line.

    • RE: FTP Connection to storage server has failed

I have this problem having migrated my VM server to real hardware. Everything is working fine apart from this one thing. I didnt create a ‘fog’ user but let the installation do it. So the username in storage management for defaultmember says ‘fog’. What user should there be ideally here and how do I make sure I have the right password? Its early for me and I havent even had coffee this morning… the trials we must endure! 😉

      Thanks guys.
