That file does not exist. Where should it come from?
The PC (well, VM actually) is running 32-bit Windows 7. -

I don’t know how a rootkit could take hold.
The legacy fog client is NOT secure.
And I have no problem with that. The point is if I can’t seem to make the new one work, then what good is it to me?
Here is what I did to install the new one:
- uninstalled the old client
- Went to http://(my fog server IP)/fog/client/download.php?newclient
- Saved SmartInstaller.exe.
- Ran it and gave it the IP of my server
- rebooted the computer.
- gave PC bogus host name
- Waited (forever) for machine to reboot with correct name. (it never does)
- Uninstall new client.
- Reinstall old client.
- Rebooted PC.
- PC reboots itself shortly thereafter with correct hostname.
What am I missing?

@LibraryMark The keys are set up automatically, you don’t have to do anything for it.
I tried that. I installed the new client on my master PC. Then I gave it a bogus hostname to see if the client would rename it. It never did. I reinstalled the old client and the first thing it did was reboot with the correct host name. I am sure I am doing something wrong, but at this point I don’t know what.

RE: New Fog client and security
@Wayne-Workman
I hope that I didn’t insult anyone, but I was happy as a clam with 0.32 and it’s feature set. It did everything I needed, did it well, and never gave me any trouble, but our newer PC’s did not play well with it.We are a public library and public network only has our machines on it. We use software that rolls back changes to the PC’s when they reboot. I don’t know how a rootkit could take hold. I do worry that this software will not allow changes that might keep my PC’s from communicating.
Also - I don’t find any clear explanation of how to install the new client and make sure that the encryption keys are set up correctly. Am I missing something? That might go a ways to alleviate my trepidation on using shared-key encryption just to image my PC’s.

New Fog client and security
We are using Fog 1.3.0-RC-8 and the fog client that came with 0.32. I thought I would upgrade the client and started reading about the new security model. I have no interest in it whatsoever as it seems like a lot of overkill to me. Is it installed by default? Can I remove it and still make the new client work?

RE: iPXE and Reboot Restore Rx™
@george1421 - thanks for your help. The problem with RRRx is it’s freeware, and I would suspect that the company that makes it is not interested in supporting it unless you buy a copy (or 100 in my case). I have been testing it for several days now and it seems to perform quite well and I would bet it would be more reliable then what we had been using, Fortres Grand’s Clean Slate. The only problem is you have to install it at the first boot after the sysprep stuff finishes, and it does not include a silent install option. Again, it’s freeware and the company says it’s not supposed to have any bells and whistles. Fortunately, there is an AutoIT script that can install it hands off, so I intend to put that at the end of my post install script and see where that takes us.
Thanks again!

RE: iPXE and Reboot Restore Rx™
OK - here’s a wrinkle - I have normally used ipxe.kkpxe because I have some realtek nics that won’t boot to ipxe.kpxe. This morning after once again testing all the possible exit choices on a lark I thought I would try ipxe.kpxe and it seemed to boot all of my machines and did allow RRRx to work on the test machine.
Is this file (ipxe.kpxe) updated from time to time? And what’s the difference between it and ipxe.kkpxe?

RE: iPXE and Reboot Restore Rx™
@george1421
I did say that I am on the trunk version, current as of yesterday morning. Version 1.3.0-RC-7
SVN Revision: 5946 -
RE: iPXE and Reboot Restore Rx™
I tried every exit type, including sanboot, grub and grub_first_hdd.
I do need PXE boot first, as I image as many as 40 machines (sometimes in another building) at a time - I would rather not have to go to each machine and hit f12.
-
RE: iPXE and Reboot Restore Rx™
george1421 - Thanks for your reply. I will try to answer your questions the best I can.
The target machines are bios-based
I am using the latest trunk (as of this morning)
I do not know if reboot-restore created it’s own MBR. How do I look for that?
I do deploy these machines with fog.
The reference machine does not have RR installed. I install it after the machines are imaged. If it was installed on the image the hostname changer would not work. When I escape out of PXE boot, RR does it’s job. When I let the PXE menu load and then try to boot the hard drive, RR errors out.
-
iPXE and Reboot Restore Rx™
Folks - I am trying to use Reboot Restore Rx (a software product that rolls back any hard drive changes upon reboot) with fog and I am not able to get it to boot after the PXE boot hands things over to the hard drive. I tried every Host Bios Exit Type listed but Reboot Restore Rx always errors out. When I set the PC’s to boot from the hard drive, it works as it should. Does anybody have any experience with this product or similar?
Thanks!

@Wayne-Workman said in Multicast not working on 1.3.0-RC-5 SVN Revision: 5943:
@LibraryMark If you had the new client deployed, they would register themselves, and show up as pending hosts for you to approve. Just an FYI.
Also - if exporting the hosts list isn’t working for you, we need to figure out why and fast. I can help you figure out why - please message me and we can do a Team Viewer session and I’ll figure it out. I won’t break what you’ve done so far, either - I’m actually pretty good at this.
Thanks for the offer, Wayne. I put in some extra fields int the host table, like hostHomepage and hostScreenWidth and such. Might that be causing the problem?

Thanks for the reply. I meant my comment to be more informational than anything else. I see from searching this topic that it happens to other folks, too.
I just ran that command and it finished in 3.4 seconds at 5.24MB/s. I tried it again and it’s still running at 116KB/s with an ETA of 6 minutes.
Pinging www.fogproject.org brought back 192.213.199.177.

RE: Multicast not working on 1.3.0-RC-5 SVN Revision: 5943
Finally got it working. I had to completely wipe my install and not try to import anything from my old server. Now I have to go around and re-register all my PC’s but I’ll gladly do that so than I can image them all at the same time.
Thanks for all your help. FOG is a true lifesaver!
