There is a relatively easy-to-follow article on the wiki for compiling your own kernel. The hardest part is knowing what drivers to include or remove. I got lucky and based on my experience and the documentation in the xconfig, I was able to get my kernel setup and working after a few tries. I had some compile errors, but a quick look on the internet showed that the failing modules were things I’d never use, so it was a no brainer to remove them.
On that topic, could I just add the video drivers for this thing?? I’m guessing FOG can access the LAN as I see the splash page. It doesn’t start going all LSD till after I make a selection.

Thanks that worked like a champ! Now onto trying to compile a kernel.

Is there a way to see what kernel I’m currently using? Like I said, I /think/ I recall having downloaded the 3.3.3 kernel. I just want to know what to go back to in case I mess up royally.

Shoot. I really don’t know where to even begin with that. I’m not a programmer at all. I can do some scripting but that’s about it.

Should I try to update to a new kernel? How can I tell what the current FOG kernel really is?

    • Acer Veriton N2620G PC flashing like it's on an acid trip!

I’m testing out an Acer Veriton N2625G PC with Linpus Linux on it (stock) as a test for Linux alternatives. Normally we use N281G PC’s with Windows 7 Pro, and these work like a champ with FOG. I have another Linux image on my FOG Server I was planning to throw on this machine. I was also planning to upload this image as a “just-in-case” measure.

I choose to boot from LAN like normal, and choose to register the PC. I see the typical readouts “loading yadda yadda this, loading yadda yadda that”, but then things get interesting. The monitor starts flashing all the colors of the spectrum! Reds, blues, greens, whites, purples! It’s like the machine is on an acid trip!

My version of FOG is 0.32

I think my kernel is 3.3.3.

You will need to sysprep. I recommend building a single machine as you want it, uploading that machine’s image to FOG (which will be specific to that machine) i.e. “Machine_A_PreSysprep”, keeping that image in case you need to rehash the sysprep, as from my experience, once a machine is sysprepped, it cannot be sysprepped again (unless of course you erase the sysprepped HDD redeploying the pre-sysprepped image) After sysprepping a PC you like, upload image without reloading into Windows.

Here are some files which may help you, including some answer files with more or less everything stripped out just to get you started. One thing I can recommend regarding the answer files is to use WAIK for Windows 7 (WAIK4W7). I believe you can find it from Microsoft for free as a download.

Ahhh silly question then. I guess I need to try to get grub installed (I don’t really know what boot loader Peppermint uses).

    • RE: SWAP partition not recognized after imaging

Apparently Fog doesn’t recognize the SWAP file. (See these posts: http://fogproject.org/forum/threads/cant-upload-linux-image-caixa-magica-16.503/ & http://fogproject.org/forum/threads/deploying-linux.3776/ ) I would like to learn more about how you are or intend to deploy Linux, as I am working on a similar project.

    • RE: Deploying Linux

I’ve made a VM under Virtual Box (bridged the adapter, ) and have uploaded the image, though when I deploy the image to a second VM, it doesn’t boot. I’m using Peppermint 3, it’s based off Lubuntu. I installed it to a 6GB ext3 partition (/dev/sda1). This I uploaded to FOG and deployed it to another VM with an 8GB HDD. It doesn’t boot. I’ve booted into the VM with a Mint ISO, to see the partition, which shows that the 6GB ext3 partition with a boot flag.

I seem to recall reading others had issues with booting when trying to deploy linux.

Are they Windows DVD’s? Linux DVD’s?
Some of both, really. Some might even just be software.

I’ll have to read over those links.

    • RE: Just a possability question: Shared DVD-ROM via PXE menu...

I do try to make flash drives bootable via netbootin (sp?), though I have one or two computers that can’t boot from flash drives and I can’t upgrade the BIOS - I can’t find an upgradable BIOS or one isn’t available. I’ve also had a few ISO’s that didn’t work.

    • Just a possability question: Shared DVD-ROM via PXE menu...

I have several computers with just CD-ROM’s (or no optical disc at all). For a while, I was simply using an external DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive (my personal device from home). However, now I’m starting to run out of room (physical room). I’m not a programmer, so I don’t even know where to begin! Would it be possable to share the DVD-ROM drive on the FOG server and have an option to boot from it on the PXE menu??

For example, I put a disc into the FOG server’s optical drive and from a networked computer I could boot to it.

    • Deploying Linux

I am pretty familiar with the process of deploying a Windows machine via FOG (specifically Windows 7) - how sysprep works, resets the computer ID, hostname, etc, etc. I wouldn’t declare myself an expert as I’m more than certain I have more to learn, but at least I’ve got a working gist of the situation, emphesis on working.

So my question is this. What is the alternative to this on a Linux distribution? How would you deploy and manage a Linux distribution? For the record, I’m using Debian-based Linux distros (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint).

    • Selecting multiple hosts, and an action (Delete?)

This isn’t a problem, per se. But more of a suggestion for a future release. Heck, for all I know it could have already been implimented.

I notice you can checkmark multiple hosts, there should be a delete button if you’re ridding the database of more than one host as opposed to doing this one at a time.

      Just my two cents.
