    • Is fog changing something in Ubuntu

      My scenario is very simple:
      4 MBR partitions, all primary. sda1 - windows reserved, sda2 - Windows 10, sda3 - Ubuntu (16.04 LTS), sda4 - swap.
I created an image of this layout using the default image settings, the only things I changed were operating system (set to Linux) and image type set to multiple partitions (not resizable).

I deployed the image back to the computer I captured from to test.

Windows 10 is ok, I didn’t see any problems.
But Ubuntu behaves strangely. First, the boot process takes longer and the splash screen appears (it didn’t before deploy). Here it is:

      Before deploy

      And after deploy:

Another thing I noticed is that Ubuntu seems slower when opening apps or logging in in other accounts I created, compared to how it worked before deploy.

Is FOG doing something to the Ubuntu partition after deployment? Something like reinstalling GRUB or changing in any way the Linux config files?

    • Rename Linux host after deployment

I have a dual boot deployment situation. I manage the Windows part with my own scripts, but I would like to rename the Ubuntu part after deployment (changing the host name to the same name as the host name registered in FOG).
      Can this be done somehow?

The partition structure is very simple. I have 4 primary MBR partitions: the Windows recovery partition, the Windows partition, the Ubuntu partition and the swap.

For me, doing it from the sysprep answer file seems the “natural” way. After all, it is built into windows. Why use an external tool, when the built-in one works just fine?
I use third party tools only if Microsoft doesn’t offer a good solution.
For example, I ended up using FOG because Microsoft had no tool that would allow me to deploy dual boot machines. But if you need to deploy only Windows, the RIS from Windows server is an excellent tool.

Why don’t you join the domain from the sysprep answer file?

@george1421 I’ll do some more testing Monday and get back with the results.

@wayne-workman Thank you. I was just curious what cli tool is used to create the partitions, because it seems that this process causes some problems with Linux partitions.
But I have to do some more testing. I’ll be back with the results.

I would like to know what app does FOG use to manage partitions? I’m referring to the deployment stage, when it creates the partitions and later extends them, after deploying the image.

    • Deploy way faster than Capture

This is more of a curiosity. The scenario is this:
Server is installed on Ubuntu 16.04, on a laptop with SSD.
I capture from a lab computer, connected to the same Gigabit switch as the server. Capture speed: around 2Gb/min.
I redeploy the image I just captured to the same computer: speed: around 10 Gb/min.

Why is there such a big speed difference between the two operations?

As odd as this sounds, we don’t use active directory. Not really needed in our environment.

    • Use FOG in both isolated network and integrated in main network

I am new to FOG and I would like to know if the following scenario is possible and how to implement it.
First, I would like to use FOG for isolated network deployment. I understand how to do this, I found the tutorial so no issues here.
But between deployments, I would also like to use the same server for Windows (and Linux) client management, using the FOG client app installed on each machine.
How do I configure the FOG server for this? I have to disable DHCP (obviously) and change the FOG server NIC ip to one from our internal network. Any other things I have to set on the server?
What about on the clients? How do clients find the server? By IP? By name?
