• RE: How do you deal with Licensing?

Quick question – Originally we were under our own Open Licensing and had a number of volume licenses. Now that we’re part of another company we fall under their licensing agreement which, in this case, is Select Licensing. I’m assuming I’d actually need to be using KMS licenses to follow this guide…

Is there a way to simplify the licensing issue with these current open licenses and the new Select licensing?

chad, thanks so much for taking the time to post this. this will be a huge help fixing my current imaging process to clean it up. I’ll probably have a handful of questions if you don’t mind answering or if anyone else from the community can chime in, I’ll take all the help I can get.

Off-topic - Is there a FOG chat/IRC?

Just to add more information to provide insight to our current imaging process, I had been using this guide previously:

http://fogproject.org/forum/threads/windows-7-deployment-fog-sad2-driver-tool.380/

We have a stable image now but I still feel like we have too much hands on with the machine after it has been imaged.

I do have that specified and actually, I just figured this thing out. I was going through the steps of enabling SPAN on the port and as I was setting the destination port, the switch didn’t like the port security being on if I was going to monitor it. I disabled switchport security on both ports and bam, the VM boots into the PXE menu.

I don’t know that I really need this feature on anyhow but then again I’m only studying for the CCENT, i’m no network engineer 😕

Thanks for the follow up and support chad. Now if you can spare some time to help me with my other issue 😉

Thanks, I’ll give this a look. I also found a guide on enabling SPAN/RSPAN to monitor the port. I’ll try this and post what I find.

Also, I don’t believe the FOG server is set up as a DHCP server (I believe that was an option during initial setup?) so the WRT is actually providing DHCP if I remember my setup correctly.

There’s also the Linksys WRT54G router attached to this Cisco switch. This thing is completely off of the production network so nothing else attached besides that and other workstations getting imaged.

I guess if I could draw it out it would look like this:

Linksys Router -> Cisco 2960 24 port PoE switch -> Workstations

• RE: VM Client can't PXE boot

Here’s the error message I see when the VM is attempting to PXE boot.

%PORT_SECURITY-2-PSECURE_VIOLATION: Security Violation occurred, caused by MAC address 000c.2994.8afd on port FastEthernet0/2

It says this repeatedly.

Here’s the configuration on the port, just like every other port:

interface FastEthernet0/2
switchport mode access
switchport port-security
switchport port-security aging time 2
switchport port-security violation restrict
switchport port-security aging type inactivity
macro description cisco-desktop
spanning-tree portfast
spanning-tree bpduguard enable

• RE: VM Client can't PXE boot

Are you familiar with what I should be seeing? I do notice that when the VM is attempting to get an IP, there are repeated errors regarding port security. I’m no longer in the office but I can paste the error message here when I’m back in the office. When I’m attempting to boot the VM, I see the same error message over and over.

I’m logged onto the switch on the same machine so I can see it happening.

I’d ask my networking guy but to be completely honest, I’m actually studying for CCENT/CCNA and I’d like to see if I can’t figure this out. Additionally, when I saw him configuring this switch he was using Cisco SDM (or whatever GUI you can use to configure these switches).

Thanks for your help chad.

• RE: How do you deal with Licensing?

Hey guys,

Thanks for the responses. Tom, to answer your questions:

To preface this, we’re deploying Dell OptiPlex 790s and now, more recently OptiPlex 7010s.

1. When you receive your systems, do they come with a restore CD and are they, if you turn them on, preinstalled?

They are preinstalled and have Windows 7 on them.
2. Are the systems you receive, more or less, the same system?

Pretty much. The most recent upgrade we received from Dell are these new OptiPlex 7010s.
3. Are the systems you receive SLP keyed
If you where to use the cd do you have to enter the key or not; if you don’t need to enter a key, you’re systems are probably SLP keyed.

They’re likely SLP keyed like you say (i’m not familiar with the term) because they can be used out of box but we turn around and image them immediately.

Chad-bisd, your solution sounds great and if you could provide some insight, I’d appreciate it! As it is, I feel like we’re in the middle of some hodge-podge imaging deployment process. It would be nice to have all MS applications automatically activate.

Our current imaging and post-imaging process are still fairly hands on and I’d like to clean it up as much as possible. I’d be happy to give details here if you’d like to hear how my process works now and what I can do to improve/streamline it.

• How do you deal with Licensing?

It’s a pretty simple question but for whatever reason, we run into this with all of our images. We have volume licensing through Microsoft which, in all likelihood will be changing as our company had been acquired some time ago. Given that, all of our IT processes will change to be in line with the parent company soon but I don’t think it fixes our licensing issue(s).

We image a number of desktops each month that run Windows 7 and Office 2010. We’re slowly coming up against a wall of new computers that will fail the Office activation as the licenses are all in use. At that point we’ll have to manually select a license and activate it.

My question is, is there a better way to deal with this? I have a sinking feeling I’m dealing with licensing all wrong and my methods are highly inefficient. How does everyone else deal with MS Licensing?? Would a KMS work in my instance? What the heck is it? Or better still, do I even need it? I’m really just throwing out questions to try and find an answer for any the hundreds of questions I have regarding licensing.

What do you do?

• RE: VM Client can't PXE boot

It is configured for a bridged network. I had also tried NAT just to see if that would make a difference.

• RE: VM Client can't PXE boot

From everything I can tell, yes.

I have a FOG server plugged into the Cisco switch and a separate machine running Windows 7 plugged into the same switch. That W7 machine is running VMware Workstation, receiving its IP via DHCP. Everything looks good networking wise. I can also PXE boot with that very same W7 machine.

• RE: VM Client can't PXE boot

Hey Tom,

We did in fact go to a managed switch. Most of the ports were configured by someone using what I believe was Cisco’s SDM.

I’m using the WRT-54G to pass DHCP to all the hosts connected on the switch if that makes any sense. It probably doesn’t make much sense from a networking standpoint but it works for every host we’ve connected to it so far aside from this VM. We’ve imaged upwards of 200+ machines from desktops to laptops to thin clients and only this VM is having issues connecting.

• VM Client can't PXE boot

Let me just preface this by saying that I had it working before the switch was replaced. We were using a simple set up of a Linksys WRT54G with DD-WRT and a basic 10 port NetGear 10/100 switch. After switching to this Catalyst 2960, I haven’t been able to get my VM to PXE boot.

I can ping the fog server from the physical machine.
I can ping it from the VM when it comes up in Windows
I can access the fog interface from within the VM so I know it sees it.

When the PXE boot bombs out, it comes up with the PXE-E51 and M0F and once I saw a PXE-E53.

I’m not really sure what the issue could be. I’m following a guide that was hosted here some time back regarding imaging Windows 7 machines. I even tried recreating my VM to see if it was a problem with that but no dice. I’ve also created the vmware_user local account on the physical machine.

I’m at a loss here. It’s using bridged networking (suggested by the guide) so I’m not really sure what else it could be. Maybe I’m just missing something here big time.

I also saw a suggestion to turn on portfast on each interface of the switch. Unfortunately, that’s already done.

Any clues or tips?

Thanks!

Well, I went ahead and moved my server to another machine. Reinstalled with ubuntu 12.04, started clean and it looks like everything’s working again.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find the root of the problem but it appears I’m back up and running.

• Slow image upload - /hung_task_timeout

Hey all,

I’ve been having a heck of a time trying to figure out why I’m getting the attached error. I haven’t changed anything with my set up and all of a sudden, the upload is slowing to a crawl and I’m getting a “hung_task_timeout” error message.

The hard FOG server has plenty of space (~125GB free) and no issues on the network that I can see. I should note I’m doing this through a VM but it’s worked like a charm before with images uploading in less than 3 minutes.

Yesterday, I did change the multicast addresses as my multicast wasn’t working. Could this be an issue? I’m on an 8 port gig switch so I don’t think it’s network related.

I’m going to try deploying an image now to see if there are problems on that end.

– edit:

so I started a multicast and it went fine without any hiccups. I even unregistered the host machine with the issue uploading, re-registered but still see the same problem. I’m kinda stumped here, not sure what I can check to see why I’m having this problem.

– 2nd edit:

I pushed an image from a freshly imaged machine and that did the same thing, started freezing up around 2%. Why would it be able to deploy just fine but have issues uploading?

• RE: Enabling DHCP service after FOG installation

Thanks guys, I’ll give this a shot now.

OK, It’s installed, but for some reason I can’t get it to issue the IP addresses. Is there anything I should be checking for besides the .conf files?

• Enabling DHCP service after FOG installation

Is there any way to install/enable the DHCP service after doing an installation? I previously had it set up on an isolated network with a small Linksys WRT54G but now need to move it to a switch so I can do larger volumes. I don’t think 4 ports at a time is going to cut it 😕

Has anyone had to do this? I’m a linux noob so please be patient. I’ve done some searching on the forums but couldn’t come up with anything besides this:
http://fogproject.org/forum/threads/enabling-dhcp-in-fog.739/

Not sure if it’s what I want though.

Thanks!
