Some Machines do not restart after cloning. Stuck on message "251 - Restarting Machine" HELP

  • I’ive had this problem the whole time with using fog

It clones fine but on certain machines it doesn’t reboot when it says something like 251 - restarting system

It just stays on that message like its froze and won’t restart until you hard power it off and on pressing the power button

Once you have hard powered it off and on, it will boot up and join the the domain no problems

    ANY IDEA’S ANYONE?? HELP

    thanks

    Lee

  • I tried that and it still didn’t fix it, very wierd I though

  • Did you try any of the other options mentioned in the first link? Also, I accidentally put the kernel option in as “reboot=BIOS”, which did not work. I’ve since learned that many (if not all) kernel options are case sensitive. So make sure you enter:
reboot=bios
• Mine hasn’t actually cured the problem which is a shame and im still having problems with fog, it clones around 5% sometimes 75% then bombs out

    HELP

  • I had some Dell Optiplex 960s that were doing this. This setting solve the problem. Thanks.

  • Hi Mark,

I have been trying that option in the kernel args under each image, feel abit thick now to know I can set it globally.

Brilliant work, I shall test this today and see if it works. Just so happens all of our machines are Dells and this was on a 380.

    Thanks

    Lee

  • Hi again Lee,

Just found the answer that worked for me.
    See this thread:

  • Hi Lee,

I have the same issue, have been trying for a while to solve. Some PC’s work, others dont, even with the sane hardware! It’s bizarre.

Some forums say by setting different restart options in /etc/default/grub.cfg file this will solve the issue, but I think this is only for the host machine, not the Fog clients.
    http://linux.koolsolutions.com/2009/08/04/howto-fix-linux-hangfreeze-during-reboots-and-restarts/

I’ve tried these but it doesnt fix my issues. Earlier kernels work, but then there are different issues, like some machines not imaging.
This is a pain, especilly with remote site as it prevents completing remote rebiulds.

Can anyone else shed some light on this, are there any reboot options available with the host imaging script?

    Thanks in advance, Mark
