Unable to connect to database

Can anyone give me the commands in linux to check for this - not much of a linux user, but want to become one! I’m sitting at the administrator prompt of my FogServer.

If you have a root password for mysql:
[CODE]mysql -u root -pPASSWORD -h <hostname> fog[/CODE]
