Unless I’m misunderstanding you, wouldn’t quick image or possibly even Capone do what you want?

Hi, and thanx for your answer. Since i am very new to fog, i am not sure that those options would do what i want. I believe quick image could be an option, the problem is, what if i need to swap that machine with a spare ?

The machines have identical hardware. So if a machine crashes or is infected, i want to be able to tell the user to disconnect it, swap it and load his own image.

I am not sure quick image would do that since swap machines have no default image ?

Thanx for the capone idea. Did not know it and just read a bit, but the same question goes for capone. What to do with a machine that has no default image ?

I don’t know how to achieve what you’re asking, Capone can be used to image a machine which hasn’t registered or has no default image assigned to it but I don’t think its flexible enough to do what you’re wanting.

This is also something I am looking for…

Here is what I need to achieve…

We have quite a few machines in our lab and we need the ability to install a variety of OS’s on each machine.

For example… I have a DL380 G7 that might have Windows 2008 on it for one project, and then, we need to install 2008 R2 for another project. Then, it will need to be re-imaged back to 2008 or 2003, or Linux.

This needs to be done via the boot menu so anyone managing projects can choose what OS they need.

Is there a way to do this with Fog?

We have also been looking into Altiris RDP, but that software is quite complicated and requires training to use.

              Joe

Hi Joe, i found this link, did not try yet but it looks like it could do the trick.

It works using the Bypass Host Registration. We currently use that for 5 different images at my place of employment. It makes imaging a breeze, and very quick. We have our images password protected though, so only “authorized” users can image machines.

                    Hi Kevin,

Do you have a “how to” for using bypass host registration? I looked at the wiki at http://www.fogproject.org/wiki/index.php/Bypass_Host_Registration but am not sure what to do with noreg.gz or bypass.gz.

I work for a college. There is a good chance that, due to hardware refresh, we may be getting in several (190) new computers this summer and I would like to be able to push a default image to them without host registration and am interested in your process.

                    Thanks in advance!
