Detected file system: Raw

I have been very frustrated with figuring out the method of imaging and deploying Win7 with what resources I have. Win7 is just a whole new ballgame when it comes to creating images! That aside, I am now trying the VM route. I have setup Win7 x64 with a single partition on a VirtualBox VM. I am able to use PXE and attach to FOG .32. My issue at this point is why it is detecting the file system as ‘raw’ and not ‘ntfs’, when uploading my image? For one, it is slower and a larger image. Also, it didn’t seem to capture the image correctly or isn’t deploying it properly, because the system that I thought was imaged successfully, ended up with a ‘no operating system’ message at boot up. I checked the partition and it was unformatted? I assume this has something to do with the image capture? First, is there a way to fix the VM or FOG, so that it will properly upload my image as a single partition and ntfs, not raw? Second, do you know why my image deployment would end up with an unformatted partition and no data? . I am very frustrated with the whole process and would like it see the light at the end of the tunnel so I can move forward with our Win7 deployments. Thanks for any help you can give.

No one has run into the image being captured as raw, when I have set the image to be a single partition (resizable)? I assume it has something to do with the VM setup and the hardware detection, but I am not sure where to start?

I’ve not tried doing anything with FOG and virtual machines. I suspect you are right that it has to do with the VM setup. Have you tried using a different image setting? What happens when do “multiple partition image - single disk (not resizeable)”?

I hadn’t updated since finding my fix/workaround. I did end up using “multiple partition image - single disk” and it worked fine. I had found quite a few references to Win7 image capture issues but most successful posts mentioned using multiple partitions vs. single partition. I do have a single partition install, but for whatever reason it isn’t working correctly. I guess I really have no reason use a resizable image, being this image is only for new machines, so the HDD’s will be far larger than my image drive/data. I am good with this solution, but I am curious why it won’t work the other way (works fine with XP)?Thanks.

A lot of people have had trouble with the single partition resizable option and windows 7. Honestly, I’ve never gotten it to work. I’ve been testing the .33 beta code and it didn’t work for me there either. The developers are looking into it though.

Yeah, I started to find many posts on image capture issues and using the single partition option, so that’s what got me to try multiple partition. Maybe I missed it, but wouldn’t be handy to update any official documentation that there is known issues with Win7 and single partition image capturing and it’s being looked into? That might have saved me quite a few hours of testing. -
I’m with you Chris, lots of peacemeal bits all over. Hard to have a consensus on what works and what doesn’t. This is the part that’s a showstopper for opensource. Documentation. Always. Hard to sell something so awesome, if it takes the average good tech multiple hours to troubleshoot. /frustrated

I’ve got a working set of steps for Windows 7 in VMWare as of just a few days ago. I’ll work on updating the wiki when I get a chance (first I’ll have to figure out how to edit a wiki… haha)
