Issue with newer FOG versions and HP Compaq 6710b
-
I’m having an issue with newer versions of FOG and HP Compaq 6710b laptops (it also occurs with older versions and updated kernels). When I PXE boot I get the FOG menu but nothing works correctly except memtest86 and the ‘Quick Registration and Inventory’ function.
It appears that everything is running in the background, but will not display on screen (so if I remember the correct order of input and type carefully on a ‘Full Registration and Inventory’ I am pretty sure it would work but have not tested this, only the quick version).
Additionally if I try an upload or deploy it will make it to ~99% but freeze as it finalizes. I watched this from the web interface and from the file size on the server - nothing displays on screen.
To rule out anything custom I set up a fresh Ubuntu 10.04 install with FOG .29 defaults and it works fine.
A fresh install of versions .31 or .32 do not work, and neither does .29 with the newest kernel. While I wanted to point this out for others to be aware of, has anyone else had and overcome this issue? What did you do to fix it?
I need to run the newer kernel to support HP 8200 Elite models, otherwise I would just stick with the old version. Currently I am running a FOG server in Virtualbox just for this particular laptop until I figure out a better idea that’s not more work than it’s worth.

I just finished imaging a set of 6710b and 2510p laptops today. They all have the same problem you explained (won’t display FOG stuff when PXE booted other than initial screen). I got around this by pulling the MAC addresses of the NICs and adding the hosts manually. Once they’re in if you then select “Full Host Registration and Inventory” from the FOG boot screen it will compile the hardware info and add it into the host file and then reboot without any further intervention.
In terms of imaging I had no problems deploying to them (I have a single Windows 7 image that I use for all machines), so I’m not sure what might be going on there for you. -
I am able to do the quick inventory so afterward I would be able to do the full inventory to update them.
But I am imaging them with XP, and it will hang at the very end. I think the partition or boot information is in that 1% that wasn’t transferring because I can’t get an imaged machine to boot after aborting it.
Uploading doesn’t work either, but it doesn’t damage the image I create, XP will just verify the volume and boot as usual. Thanks for the update though, verifies that I’m not crazy or doing something I’m overlooking.
I found the issue is the same with older and newer BIOS versions. -
I had the same issue until I upgrade my kernel to 3.2.4 core. It is most likely a missing driver from the other kernel modules or something. My 6710b work fine now. Fog 0.32 with Kernel 3.2.4 core.

This worked. Thanks a lot!
It was basically guesswork as to what would and wouldn’t work so I just sat it aside while I worked on other open projects.
For others with this problem:
The 3.2.4 kernel is not working currently in the update console, if you get the error Download Failed: filesize = 0 follow the instructions in posts 8 & 9 in this thread to manually download and install it: http://fogproject.org/forum/threads/kernel-3-2-4-core.298/
