So I am new to fog, have some linux experience in frequently playing with it for the past decade or so and am building a kernel for Fog because I have an ESXi 5 server where the disks are not being seen and I read that this could help. I tried to sum up the beginning. . .but naturally there is a lot of research and work that got me here.

With slight modificiations to the great instructions provided here:
http://fogproject.org/wiki/index.php?title=Building_a_Custom_Kernel

I have managed to get to the vast world of the linux kernel configuration on ubuntu 11.11 (I think it is .11 anyhow).

I have questions now and I am hoping that someone can kick me in the right direction. Don’t get me wrong. . .this is pretty fancy and I am going to learn more about it. . .but for now. . I need to get fog working or move onto another solution.

My questions are as follows:

1. there are a ton of options and in the link I found which guided me on this path. . .no body specified what options to select to make it work. ? Any ideas?
2. More of a general ‘I have no idea wtf I am doing question’: The linux kernel I pulled per the instructions above was version 2.6.35.3. My src directory shows the following:
linux-2.6.35.3 linux-headers-3.0.0-12-generic
linux-2.6.35.3.tar.gz linux-headers-3.0.0-14
linux-headers-3.0.0-12 linux-headers-3.0.0-14-generic

How does versioning work and how do I keep up with the dated nature of the web? Should I have pulled the 3.0.X kernel when using the instructions above or what?

Thanks for any help you can provide.,

J

I just read this which further implies I am headed in the correct direction and that the fog kernel presently being used does not have support for ESXi Thick or thin provisioned hard disks. I have read somewhere that regardless of the provisioning a 60+GB disk would be seen. I have done the math and that is no good for me so I would like it to see smaller ones. I guess question 1) becomes: Which controller drivers are needed to be built into the kernel in order to support smaller (<60GB) disks on ESXi5.
